The Finance Section is presenting The Secret of Setting Partner Compensation

Whether your profits are $3 million or $300,000 per partner, setting compensation is still one of the toughest jobs faced by any law firm leader.  This program will focus on the critical issues that make setting partner compensation productive and successful, or a disaster that your partners will mention every week for the next twelve months.

Among the questions we will address:

  • What are the three most common problems law firms run into when setting partner compensation?
  • What are the most successful partner compensation systems in use today and why?
  • Is tracking origination of clients helpful or destructive?  If the former, how can a law firm structure their origination tracking system so that it doesn’t become the latter?
  • Are there any structural or procedural elements that can be applied to any partner compensation system, which will help produce dramatically better results?
  • There is a wealth of conflicting information about the correct spread in partner compensation.  For example:  Sometimes you hear that the highest paid partner shouldn’t be paid more than four times what the lowest partner is paid.  And then you hear in other firms it is 10:1, or 15:1.  Is there a right answer?

Our speaker is Blane Prescott. Blane is a consultant and the Managing Shareholder of MesaFive, LLC, a strategy and management consulting firm based in San Francisco.
