2018 ALA National Conference and Expo

General Session:  Driving Diversity Deep into the DNA of Your Organization

by Timothy Blevins, Office Administrator, Littler

One highlight of the 2018 ALA Annual Conference was Friday morning’s general session entitled Driving Diversity Deep into the DNA of Your Organization. The session was presented by Vernice Armour, aka Fly Girl, the Marine Corps’ first-ever African American Female combat pilot.

Vernice was an amazing speaker and if you were not there you missed an inspiring, energetic and insightful presentation as Vernice shared her life story and the lessons she learned that are useful to all of us.

In combat, fighter pilots must check in to be sure that when they drop their munitions or fire at the enemy the Marines and Soldiers on the ground will be safe. Once that’s assured, the word is “Cleared Hot!” It’s safe to fire.

One takeaway from Vernice was:  Acknowledge the obstacles in your way, don’t give them power! That’s a powerful message. There are often obstacles in life and business but the key is to acknowledge them and then move on to overcome them or circumvent them. Don’t let the obstacles stop you by giving them power.

Another idea Vernice shared is that we all have a “lived catch phrase.” A statement that sums it all up for us and gives clues to how we approach the world and the obstacles. Vernice’s great-grandmother’s phrase that she’s adopted is:  Something good is gonna come of this! What a great way to approach life. Even when bad things happen her great-grandmother stepped back and realized that the obstacle was temporary and that better things were on the way.

The idea that most resonated for me is that “no plan survives contact with the enemy.” That speaks about the daily life of a legal administrator. We plan, we have skills and knowledge but there are still surprises as we execute. Vernice shared that all of us as managers and leaders have the power to do what needs to be done. “You HAVE permission to engage, there are no ground controllers in life” and, once you have done your safety check you are “Cleared Hot” to execute.

Community Connection

2018 SF Food Bank

ALA Golden Gate chapter members and business partners showed up in force this past Tuesday, May 8th at the San Francisco Food Bank.  The team built boxes and packed them with broccoli for two short hours, and together with other volunteers on that shift were able to stage over 13,000 pounds of fresh broccoli!  These boxes were transported straight to local communities over the next two days, bringing them healthy, farm fresh surplus produce from local farms in California.  What better way to network than over a head of broccoli, all while helping to get the freshest possible produce into the hands of families across the Bay Area!

If you have not yet had an opportunity to check out the Food From The Bar mission, you can learn more here.  For anyone interested in support us in our fundraising effort, you can also follow this link to the ALA Golden Gate Chapter fundraising page.

“For five weeks every year, the legal community comes together for one purpose: to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin, where one in four people face hunger. Participating firms and companies enter into a friendly competition to fundraise, contribute the most volunteer hours, and collect the most food for the SF-Marin Food Bank. Over the past 27 years, the Food From The Bar campaign has provided enough food for 19 million meals. This year’s goal is to provide 1.5 million more meals.”
