K2L Experience

K2L Experience

On March 22, 2018, over 150 ALA members and guests, as well as 30 business partner exhibitors, gathered at the iconic landmark Palace Hotel in San Francisco to attend the 2018 Knowledge to Leadership one-day educational conference and exposition.

This is my third K2L event and I have to say this year’s conference hit it out of the park!  Right out the gate, we listened to the opening keynote speaker Pat Gillette talk about the focus on diversity throughout the legal industry and the need to increase the visibility of women and minorities in leadership ranks of law firms.  That certainly got me thinking about my role at my firm  in supporting its efforts to adapt and look for innovative ways to retain and advance diverse employees. For the early morning breakout session, I attended the session put on by Walter Stella on the topic of how do employers regulate an employee’s appearance and behavior with dress and appearance, as well as restroom access, rules when they may conflict with California’s employment laws. It certainly made for an interesting and lively discussion amongst the attendees!

The lunch keynote speaker, Ellie Krug, was truly inspirational and her topic Bridging Divides: Perspectives on Grit, Resiliency and the Four Commonalities certainly gets you thinking and reflecting. This is my fourth time listening to her and she truly speaks to my heart. I always come away from one of her sessions feeling a call to do more and to have a greater impact on others. For the afternoon breakout session, I attended a very informative and engaging session on the topic of shaping the employee experience presented by our very own Steve Morris and I came away armed with very practical tips to implement at my firm right away. Throughout the day, I had an opportunity to talk to many business partner exhibitors and they seemed genuinely pleased with the event and their ability to engage attendees coming in and out of the educational breakout sessions. I have learned over the years that it is so important to build relationships with our business partners even if we do not have an immediate need for their services.

As you can imagine, it takes a full year of planning and an amazing group of very committed Golden Gate chapter leaders to plan, execute and deliver such a high quality educational event and as our signature educational conference, the Chapter is extremely proud of their accomplishments. A special thank you, filled with gratitude, to Doris Alexander, Kim Coates, Jennifer Connon, David Chi, Suzanne Lawler, Hannah Lincecum and Amie Morelli, for their extraordinary hard work and efforts in producing a standout educational event for our Chapter!  You should all be very proud!

Annie A. Lathram
