President's Message

A message from Annie Lathram, Golden Gate Chapter President

We, as a chapter, have watched the widespread devastation unfold in the Houston metropolitan area as well as surrounding communities in Texas as a result of Hurricane Harvey (and now the devastation hitting Florida from Hurricane Irma); it is a sobering reminder to all of us that disasters don’t plan ahead, but we can.  September is National Preparedness Month and I, for one, took out our emergency disaster procedures for my firm’s California offices as well as my personal emergency plan to make sure that all information is current.  Here are some helpful tips I found at  for your personal emergency plan.

  • Preparing the family for an emergency is as simple as a conversation over dinner.  Get started with tips from (

  • Consider downloading a group texting app so that your entire family and friends can keep in touch before, during and after an emergency.

  • Practice evacuating in the car with your animals, so they are more comfortable if you need to evacuate in an emergency.

  • Make sure you know what your insurance policy covers before an emergency.

  • Sign up for local emergency alerts in your area.

  • Disaster-proof important documents by creating electronic copies of all important papers and store elsewhere (like having a personal data center).

  • Keep some cash on hand in case of emergencies.

  • Learn skills you need to help yourself and others until help can arrive.

  • Beware of frauds and scams when seeking disaster assistance.  Federal and state workers never ask for/accept money and they always carry ID.

  • Get involved and be a part of something larger!

Like many of us, I’ve been glued to the news wanting to know what more I can do to help those who are impacted by the recent disasters. So far, our Chapter accepted the Boston Chapter’s recent challenge and donated $5 per member for a total of $785 to the Red Cross.  I have also donated to the Red Cross and I have donated clothing and shoes that our very own Kim Coates is collecting to send to Houston.  For those of you who have already contributed, a big thank you!  I would also like to thank you for keeping these hurricane victims in your thoughts and prayers.  The outpouring of support has been amazing and reminds me of how together we can make a difference in the lives of others during their time of need.

What is your title, the name of your firm, and how long have you been there?

California Regional Director.  Litigation Services, LLC.  September 2016.

How did you find your way into the position you hold with your company?

I have been in the court reporting industry since the late ‘70s, first working in my mother’s agency, then owning the agency, then merged with a local competitor, and then joined Litigation Services so I could offer more substantial services and locations to our clients.  Since I’ve covered the gamut of responsibilities in our industry from production, calendaring, management and client services, the company decided I was the ideal person to lead our California business development team.

What do you love the most about your job?

The people I get to serve day in and day out.  I really enjoy helping people and solving problems.  If I am able to help someone so that it makes their job easier, then it’s a successful day for me.

How did you come to be a BP of the Chapter?

I’ve known Ceanne Herndon for years.  Being part of an organization opens up the opportunity to help one another.

Michelle Sherry, Courtney Hunt and Deann Floyd. Michelle and Courtney serve clients in San Francisco, East Bay and South Bay.  Love these ladies!

What are your hobbies?

Eating….hahaha!  Cooking, cycling, scuba diving, traveling, reading, trying something new.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A singer, but I quickly realized I didn’t have the pipes to sing.

What was the greatest moment of your life?

I have been blessed with many wonderful moments in my life.  One that stands out is taking care of my ailing grandmother.  She spoiled me while I was growing up, and it was so special to take care of her with such love and tenderness like she took care of me.

What's on your playlist?

Lots of music!  Anything by Van Morrison, Warren Haynes, Amos Lee, Colin Hay…goodness, the list goes on and on.

What are you reading right now? What’s your favorite book or character?  Whose your favorite author?

Failure Is Not An Option, by Gene Kranz  I like true stories, history, but I also love a book that just takes me away on a magic carpet ride

Describe an ideal weekend getaway for you.

Going up to Boonville and getting lost in nature, then stopping by a winery for a tasting, followed by dinner at Boonville Hotel.  With my husband, of course!

What’s your favorite place outside of California?

Do you collect anything?

Vinegars, olive oils, mustards, salts…I love accoutrements.

What is your six-word memoir?

Always live life to its fullest.

What don’t you have time for that you would like to pursue?

Traveling to distant lands.

What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?

Treat others as you would like to be treated.

It’s karaoke night.  What song do you choose, and why?

Up To The Mountain.  I always wanted to do something in my lifetime that had a tremendous impact on those less fortunate.  Someone once told me that only a few incredible people, like Martin Luther King, Jr., have the ability to create aha moments, like that portrayed in Patty Griffin’s song, however, even the smallest effort can touch someone in a way that will forever help them.  This song moves me and reminds me that as long as I am alive I will keep doing everything I can to help others and every little bit helps.

If you had three wishes what would they be?

Happiness, health and a full belly of good food would be blessed on everyone every day.  No one would ever have to experience loneliness.   Desserts aren’t fattening!
